Chemistry is creating solutions that empower Americans to improve energy efficiency, making our nation’s energy supplies go further while lowering energy costs for business and families. Nearly every energy-saving technology depends on innovations in chemistry.
An example is Solarban 70XL glass by PPG Industries. Engineered with a proprietary triple-silver, low-emissivity coating, Solarban 70XL glass blocks solar heat and transmits high levels of daylight into buildings, which reduces energy use for heating, cooling and lighting, as well as energy-related CO2 emissions.
Independent energy modeling of a standard window-walled, eight-story office building shows that Solarban 70XL glass can save hundreds of thousands of dollars in upfront heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment costs and up to 13 percent in HVAC-related energy costs compared with dual-pane tinted glass.
According to calculators developed by the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, these energy savings can reduce related CO2 emissions in the same building by more than 500 tons per year, which is the yearly equivalent of removing nearly 100 passenger cars from the road.
The products of chemistry save up to 11.1 percent of total U.S. energy consumption, according to an ACC study – enough to power, light, heat and cool up to 56 million homes or power 135 million vehicles annually. These chemistry products and technologies save Americans up to $85 billion every year.
